My first internship at New Canadian Media as a Data Analyst was short but impactful. NCM was a member-based non-profit media platform that showcased immigrant journalism. During my time at NCM I learnt a lot about journalism from an immigrant perspective under founder George Abraham. Sadly NCM closed operations as of November 2024.
I wrote an article that resonates with many children of immigrants, exploring the concept of "language brokering"—the responsibility of translating for their parents in daily tasks. This often means children have intimate knowledge of their parents' finances, health, and other personal matters.
